Since sciatica can be caused by one or more of multiple conditions, only some of which are evident on MRI's it makes sense to assess and treat this painful condition gently and empirically. Pseudo sciatica (piriformis, a deep hip muscle compressing sciatic nerve) is differentiated from spinal stenosis (central stenosis or radicular) by symptom behavior and response to treatment. Any osteopathic manipulation, yoga posture, tai chi, qigong, Feldenkrais lesson or postural facilitation that relieves symptoms is repeated to soothe the nervous system, decrease pressure on nerves, decrease pain and improve function. Habits of movement that decrease pain are explored and practiced to decrease chronic stress on the nervous system.
Bill Gallagher, Holistic Physical Therapist based in New York City (NYC) has successfully treated thousands of people with sciatica.
