Herniated Disc

A spinal disc herniation sometimes called a "slipped disc", is a condition where a tear in the outer fibrous ring of an intervertebral disc allows the soft, central nucleus to leak out. This tear in the disc ring may directly cause significant pain, even without nerve root compression. Some of the terms commonly used to describe the condition include herniated disc, prolapsed disc, ruptured disc and the misleading expression "slipped disc", disc protrusion, bulging disc, pinched nerve, sciatica, disc disease, disc degeneration and degenerative disc disease. Most herniated discs heal themselves with physical therapy in about six weeks and do not require surgery. In one study 73% of patients showed improvement within 12 weeks without surgery. Rehabilitation with Holistic physical therapy includes some combination of:

  • Osteopathic Bodywork
  • Mckenzie Based Treatment
  • Postural Training
  • Lumbar Stabilization
  • Yoga Therapy (especially restorative Yoga)
  • Tai Chi
  • Qigong
  • Graduated prescriptive exercise

To heal the back, relieve pain and regain lost function.

Holistic Physical Therapist and spinal specialist, Bill Gallagher, has worked with thousands of people with disc herniation to improve pain and function. He sees patients at his office on the upper West side and makes house calls (home visits) to clients on the upper East side and upper West side of Manhattan (NYC).
